What’s the need for Fasteners?
You may ask yourself, why do we need fasteners.
Some of us may even wonder why they are made.
Some of us may not realise the importance of them in our lives, and how important they are in everyday life.
So why are they so important in daily life?
Apart from being used in engineering or construction jobs, you would think fasteners aren’t important to modern living… how wrong are you!!
They are surrounding us, have a look around you! Everything you can think of, doors, windows, the bed you sleep in, the table you eat at, the chair you’re sitting on, your child’s swing sets, your car, you name it…
Fasteners are universal components, that are used for joining different non-permanent objects together. So why do we say non-permanent objects? What we mean is those objects can be removed without destroying the fasteners. Removing a permanent joint would damage the object and the joint itself.
There are many different types of materials used to manufacture fasteners. Stainless steel, aluminium, plastic carbon steel, etc… Material coating is usually added to each fastener. It could be zinc plated, nickel plated, silver plated, self coloured, chrome finished, etc…
So, what is the difference in fixings and fasteners?
A fastener joins two objects together, whereas a fixings joins a movable object to a fixed object. However, there are many exceptions and both terms can often be used interchangeably. For example, wood screws are a type of fastener but is often used as a fixing.
So, what’s the different types of fasteners?
There are many different types of fasteners, a lot more than you can think off. Each of them can be very distinctive and can be easily identified to anyone who has worked with fasteners. Commonly used fasteners in everyday life would be screws, bolts, washers, nuts, nails, staples, clips, rings, clamps, set screws, etc…
Grub screws can be used to join two objects together and securing them not using a nut. Bolts or set screws are the most commonly used fasteners. They have a hexagonal head and are secured by using a nut. Nails are the easiest fasteners to use.
It doesn’t really matter if you remember all these different terms, what is important is that you realise how important fasteners are in our everyday life.
What would we do if it wasn’t for fasteners holding everything together…
Would you prefer to sleep on the floor?
Have you ever seen a tv with no screws?
Has your child’s swing set and slide been screwed together?
What about the stool you sit on?
So just remember how valuable fasteners are in everyday life.
